Cobourg Horticultural Society’s Annual Plant Sale on Saturday, May 19

The Cobourg Horticultural Society will hold its annual plant sale on Saturday, May 19, 2012, from 9 – 11 am, at the Columbus Community Centre, 232 Spencer Street East, at D’Arcy, in Cobourg.

The plant sale will as usual have a wide range of plants from members’ gardens, many varieties of perennials, herbs, shrubs, heritage tomatoes, and house plants. Look for the ever popular hostas, peonies, dahlias, and more! A yard sale of donated garden-related implements, decorations, tools and books is part of the fun. Shop early for the best choices, at the friendliest prices!

A large committee works on the plant sale, and most of the society’s 100 members participate by digging and potting up plants, starting seeds, providing advice to buyers, and helping with the sale. The tables at the Columbus Centre are laden on the Friday before the sale, with Plants for Shade, Plants for Sun, and so on, but once the doors open at 9 am on Saturday, there is a great rush, and two hours later the hall is practically bare.

The plant sale has grown over the years to be a major fund-raiser for the work of the society, which provides an annual scholarship to a graduating Cobourg high-school student pursuing post-secondary education in horticulture or related studies. A recent project partly funded by the club is the installation of six raised beds at the Cobourg Daycare Centre, for the children to plant and enjoy vegetables through the summer.

Everyone is welcome, but come early for the best buys!

Announcement and Invitation to the official planting in the Rose Garden, Victoria Park, Cobourg, by Deputy Mayor, Stan Frost, on Monday, June 4, 2012, at 2 pm, of the 1812 Rose

To celebrate Cobourg’s 175th anniversary, Cobourg Horticultural Society is donating an 1812 Rose to the Rose Garden in Victoria Park, which is maintained by club members. There will be a brief official planting ceremony, at the Rose Garden, and all are welcome.

Background information:

The 1812 Rose is the official rose of the 2012 Ontario Horticultural Association Convention, & The War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebration. It is a red, scented floribunda, which grows to 3-4 feet, has been especially grown for the Ontario Horictural Association, which holds its annual convention in Niagara Falls this summer. The rose was developed Palatine Fruit & Roses, a family owned nursery in the Niagara region, and is named The 1812 Rose.

If you have any questions regarding this, please do call me.

Book Review: Energy-Wise Landscape Design. A New Approach for your Home and Garden. Author Sue Reed

The premise of this excellent new (2010) book is that we can all save energy (and money) by making changes to the landscaping around our property. The author shows ways to conserve not only operating energy such as fuels for mowers, etc. and electricity for lighting but also embedded energy – that is energy used to create the equipment and materials we use in our landscaping.

The book is organized in sections on design arrangement, building and caring, methods of generating home energy, and energy efficient lighting. Chapters are short and precise so the book can be used as a reference work as well as enjoying cover to cover.

Available at the Cobourg Public Library at 712.6 Ree and possibly others in Northumberland.
